Investments and taxation if you are a US Citizen
FATCA, or to give its full title, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act is legislation enacted in March 2010 by the US Government. This has caused major compliance issues for the providers of investment options around the world, and a number of providers in NZ have chosen to take the stance that they will not be able to provide investment services to US Citizens.
This limits your options for investments if you are bringing your overseas superannuation back to New Zealand. If any of the members of your family are US citizens, you need to be fully aware of the issues relating to this Act.
A number of papers have been produced by the big accounting firms, here is a link to one: http://www.deloitte.com/nz/fatca
